On Wednesday 12 December, 2007, Pentagon are hosting a Motability Open Day between 10am and 2pm for their current and prospective Motability drivers at their showrooms (excluding Oldham which will take place on Wednesday 19th December).
Motability is the leading car scheme for disabled people. In the past 25 years over 1.5 million cars have been supplied, revolutionising many people's lives.
As well as promoting the scheme to potential Motability drivers, Pentagon’s trained Motability Specialists will also be on hand to explain how the Motability programme has changed in the past year, and the new benefits and enhancements now available to motorists qualifying for the Scheme.

| Saab wakes up dozy drivers |

• More than 300 people a year are killed by falling asleep at the wheel
• Saab tests revolutionary Driver Attention Warning system
• Infra-red cameras monitor drivers alertness
Saab’s Driver Attention Warning System is a development project designed to counter two of the most common causes of road accidents: driver drowsiness and inattention at the wheel. It alerts the driver by using a combination of text and voice messages, or vibrations in the seat cushion, as soon as the risk of drowsiness or inattention is detected.
Research has shown that not only are 20% of accidents caused by sleeplessness, but death tolls from sleep-related incidents are three times higher than other accidents, presumably because the drivers do not swerve or apply their brakes. More than 300 people in the UK a year are killed as a result of drivers falling asleep at the wheel. The Saab Driver Attention Warning System is designed to help reduce these figures.
Unlike other similar systems, the Driver Attention Warning System does not rely on measuring an erratic change in the steered direction of the vehicle. It is designed to detect the onset of drowsiness or inattention, rather than the immediate consequences.
It utilizes two miniature infra-red cameras, one installed at the base of the driver’s A-pillar and the other in the center of the main fascia, which are focused on the driver’s eyes. The image from the cameras is analyzed by software that deploys a series of alerts when the pattern of eye-lid movement indicates the onset of drowsiness, or when the driver is not looking at the road ahead.
Drowsiness Detection
The system measures the driver’s rate of eye blinking. When the cameras detect a pattern of long duration eye-lid closures, indicating the potential onset of drowsiness, a series of three warnings is initiated.
In the first instance, a chime sounds and a text warning message “Tired?” is displayed in the main instrument panel. If the driver’s eye-lid movement does not immediately revert to a normal ‘wide awake’ pattern, a speech message “You are tired” is then delivered through the car’s audio system. If there is still no response, a stronger warning tone and the message, “You are dangerously tired – stop as soon as it is safe to do so!” will come over the audio. This can only be cancelled when the driver presses a reset button in the fascia. The system is then immediately reactivated.
Inattention Detection
The cameras are also able to monitor the driver’s eye-ball and head movement. As soon as the driver's gaze moves away from what is defined as the 'primary attention zone' - the central part of the windshield in front of the driver - a timer starts counting.
If the driver's eyes and head do not return to the 'straight ahead' position within about two seconds, the driver’s seat cushion will vibrate. This will stop once the position of driver’s eyes and head are consistent with the vehicle’s direction of travel.
The processing of the infra-red image can also detect when the driver retains some peripheral vision of the road ahead - such as while looking in the rear-view mirror, the door mirror or turning a corner - and will consequently allow a slightly longer time to elapse before activating the seat vibration.
Real-life Safety
The Driver Attention Warning System is a logical extension of Saab’s real-life safety philosophy. It takes account of what the driver actually does behind the wheel, rather than what he or she should be doing.
The system, installed in a Saab 9-3 Sport Wagon, is the work of the Human Vehicle Integration team at GME Engineering in Trollhättan, Sweden. It is part of a development program, Intelligent Vehicle Safety Systems (IVSS), supported by the Swedish government and involving the national Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI).
"It is a fact that many drivers do not stop and get out of the car if they are feeling drowsy. So we are now trying to help drivers to help themselves,” says Arne Nåbo, head of the Human Vehicle Integration team, which specializes in driver ergonomics and managing the interface with in-car ‘infotainment’ systems for Saab cars.
"This system also helps prevent a dangerous habit we call 'cognitive capturing’. For example, the driver can become too absorbed in searching for a favourite CD, or programming pre-sets into the radio."
Testing
The Saab 9-3 SportWagon development car will now participate in an eight-month field trial program supervised by the Road and Transport Research Institute in Sweden.
The car is fitted with a wireless GPRS 3G modem that will download data every minute to a web server at Linköping University, where the performance of the system will be analyzed.
The trial is part of a development and validation process that could see the system become available in future Saab cars. |
| Pentagon Sponsoring UCI Track Cycling Championships |

Athletes, staff and journalists will have no problems with transportation at the forthcoming UCI Track Cycling Championships thanks to Pentagon Vauxhall and Saab. The family owned car dealer group are generously providing Vauxhall and Saab vehicles for the five day event in Manchester 26th – 30th March 2008.
Britain will be defending the seven world titles that they won at last year’s championships in Palma, Mallorca. Bradley Wiggins won two gold medals in the pursuit and team pursuit, Chris Hoy doubled up in the Keirin and 1km time-trial and Victoria Pendleton spectacularly got a hat-trick of gold medals in the women’s sprint, Keirin and team sprint events.
“A world class event requires world class back up and that’s what we have got from Pentagon,” said event organiser Alan Rushton: “Transportation is a key part of any world championships. Pentagon vehicles will be transporting hundreds of athletes from over 30 countries during the five day championships in Manchester. The riders have tight training and racing schedules and nothing can be left to chance with gold medals at stake.”

Pentagon are holding a special open weekend on the 17th and 18th November at their local showrooms, inviting qualifying employees and their families to save thousands of pounds on a new car through their company’s participation in the Vauxhall, Saab and Chevrolet Partners Programme.

With the arrival of the 1.8t BioPower engine across the Saab 9-3 range, Saab is proud to become the first, and only, car company in the UK to offer an alternative fuel engine choice in every single model in its line-up. Available in all three 9-3 bodystyles of Sport Saloon, SportWagon and Convertible, Saab’s pioneering BioPower flex-fuel engines are now available to a whole new audience of customers in the UK.
The 1.8t BioPower engine emits 50 – 70 per cent less carbon dioxide (CO2) than its 1.8t petrol engine equivalent, yet produces 17 per cent more maximum power and ten per cent more torque when running on the eco-friendly yet potent fuel source bioethanol E85. It is the third Saab BioPower engine to be launched in the UK. Two Saab 9-5 BioPower variants are already for sale here, both offering significantly reduced fossil CO2 emissions and substantially increased power and performance.

Running on bioethanol E85 fuel (85% bioethanol/15% petrol), the new 9-3 BioPower 1.8t engine delivers 17 per cent more maximum power (175 hp/129 kW v 150 hp/111 kW) and ten per cent more torque (265 v 240 Nm). In the 9-3 Sport Saloon, that translates to projected zero to 62 mph acceleration in 8.4 seconds and 50 to 70 mph in fifth gear in 13.9 seconds, compared to 9.5 seconds and 15.0 seconds, respectively, on petrol.

| Saab Anniversary Editions Now At Pentagon |

Saab will celebrate its 60th anniversary by launching special editions of its 9-5 and 9-3 model lines, featuring unique exterior and interior detailing, worth up to £3,000, all at no extra cost to the customer. The Anniversary Editions will go on sale from January 2007.
Initially founded as a manufacturer of military aircraft, Saab surprised the automotive world in June 1947 when it revealed the prototype for its first production car, the Saab 92. With streamlined bodywork, unitary construction and front wheel drive, it owed little to the conventional design wisdoms of the time, establishing a tradition for innovative and independent thinking that has characterised the Saab brand ever since. In 2007, 60 years on from the unveiling of the timeless Saab 92, Saab’s clean bold lines testify to a Swedish design ethic which is as apparent today as it ever was.
Anniversary Editions of the Saab 9-3 range will all feature DVD Satellite Navigation and Bluetooth phone systems as standard (with a value of £2,580), whilst externally they are available with a choice of colours, including a unique optional Ice Blue metallic paint finish, colour-keyed door handles and special Anniversary five-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels, all at no additional cost. Internally, features will include black sports seats with grey inserts, contrast stitching and the word ‘Saab’ embossed on the front seat facings.
The Saab 9-5 Anniversary Edition models will benefit from an equally attractive package. Externally, the cars will be offered with a choice of six metallic colours plus the unique optional Ice Blue metallic paint finish and special five-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels. Estate models also include optional roof rails finished in matt chrome.
Inside, all Anniversary Edition 9-5s will come with a DVD Satellite Navigation system, worth up to £2,200. The 9-5 Anniversary Edition trim includes black sports leather front seats with a Saab logo embossed on the upper backrest. All seats include contrasting inserts in grey leather, together with grey contrast stitching, which is also adopted for the door armrests. The Saab 9-5 Estate also features a chromed aircraft-shaped handle in the cargo floor and chromed air vent control knobs, similar to that on the 9-3.
The introduction of the 2007 Saab 60th Anniversary Edition models is the first step in a series of initiatives that Saab is planning in recognition of a rich heritage founded in aircraft design, Scandinavian culture and a tradition for independent, forward thinking.
